Built at the turn of the century by Joseph H. DeHart, the house faced the site of the famed Mountain Rose Distillery Number 250. One of the few legal distilleries in the state of Virginia, the Mountain Rose, known for "honest goods" and "full measure," produced such delicacies as "Old Ike" rye whiskey, "Mountain Dew" corn whiskey, and "Pride of Virginia" corn whiskey. The quality of goods produced by the Mountain Rose was so good, it is said to have supplied the White House with spirits during Prohibition!
The house itself is another example of Joe's attention to detail. Designed in the shape of a "T" with porches on every exterior wall, the house is built entirely of wood cut and dried on the property and bricks made from clay and placed in a kiln which had been specially built to fire them. It features a metal roof, Victorian embellishments and tongue and groove woodwork.
In 1992, the Mountain Rose Bed and Breakfast Inn, in the "honest goods: tradition of Number 250", opened in full bloom and hosted its first overnight guests! Since that time, the Inn has blossomed into one of the premier B&Bs in the area winning numerous awards and delighting guests with fabulous stays, elegant breakfasts and wonderful memories.
